The Western Alliance Symposium returns to lovely Lorne this year!

The Western Alliance Symposium is an opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and forge new collaborations, and to showcase some of the fantastic research from across western Victoria and beyond. The event will also feature a showcase in collaboration with Deakin Rural Health, as well as the ever-popular Symposium cocktail function at the Lorne Hotel rooftop.

The Call for Abstracts is NOW OPEN. 

Oral presentation abstracts are invited from those working in health services, primary care and universities describing a project that aims to change health policy, practice or outcomes in the regional and rural Victorian setting.

The Western NSW Health Research Network is proud to announce the WHRN 2026 Research Symposium:

“Innovating for Health Equity: Bridging Gaps in Rural Healthcare”

This symposium presents a unique opportunity for rural health care professionals, academics, researchers, and policymakers to come together to collaborate and share insights on the challenges and solutions related to rural health research.

The 2026 Symposium will feature key research streams focusing on various aspects of rural health, including rural health workforce, training, and education; community and consumer-led/co-designed research; models of care and health service delivery; First Nations health and wellbeing; chronic health conditions; rural mental health and wellbeing; older person’s health and wellbeing; and children and youth health and wellbeing.

The chosen theme for the 2026 Symposium underscores the importance of of addressing disparities in health access and outcomes in rural communities. These disparities are influenced by geographic, socioeconomic, and cultural factors, necessitating innovative research approaches to effectively tackle them. This theme also highlights the need for innovative solutions and research initiatives to improve the health and well-being of rural residents. By fostering collaboration, embracing innovation, and prioritising health equity, we can work towards building a healthcare system that caters to the needs of all individuals, irrespective of their location.

Health Systems Global (HSG) organizes a Symposium every two years to bring together its members with the full range of players involved in health systems, policy and research. There is no other international gathering that serves the needs of this community.

The 9th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research, HSR2026, will be co-hosted by the Mohammed bin Rashid School of Government of the UAE and the Knowledge to Policy (K2P) Center at the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon, and will take place in Dubai in November 2026.

The theme of HSR2026 is Future-Focused Health Systems in a Changing World.

Victoria has some of the best cancer outcomes in the world and is recognised as having a leading cancer system. However, benefits from our world class system are not experienced equally by all Victorians, and that gap is widening.

Where you live, your income, your cultural background, and how the system sees you all impact the care you receive and your chances of survival. This event will spotlight the importance of equity in outcomes of cancer, why it matters, what it looks like in practice, and how we can work together to address it.

Join us for a special keynote address and presentations from projects that are taking real steps to assess or address inequities in cancer services and outcomes. Together, we’ll explore how we can shift from awareness to action.

This event will bring together leaders, educators, researchers, health workers, and the community to prioritise health equity in cancer care.

The aim

To strengthen collective capability across the cancer sector workforce in Victoria to assess and address inequities in cancer care, by deepening awareness, understanding and building momentum for action.

Event objectives

• Deepened attendees understanding of health inequities across the cancer care continuum.
• Increase attendees awareness of guiding health equity principles and considerations in achieving equitable cancer care and outcomes.
• Explored real-world examples of efforts to assess and address inequities in cancer care and outcomes, informed by research, lived experience, and practice.
• Connected with others committed to equity in cancer care in Victoria to foster shared learning and collaboration, building momentum for action.

Event intended outcomes

• Explain key health inequities across the cancer care continuum and their impact on outcomes.
• Identify health equity principles and considerations and how they can inform equitable cancer care and outcomes.
• Analyse real-world examples of initiatives addressing cancer care inequities, incorporating insights from research, lived experience, and practice.
• Engage with peers and colleagues about equity in cancer care and establish connections for future collaboration and shared learning opportunities.

Join us online or in-person in Adelaide, Australia, for a Special Topics in Evidence Synthesis Symposium (26th November) and/or a Risk of Bias Workshop (November 27th) with global leaders in the field of systematic reviews and risk of bias. Take this opportunity to hear from the world’s leading experts and meet and network with them at this event.

This will be a hybrid event, delivered in-person in Adelaide, Australia, and online via Zoom in ACST (Australian Central Standard Time).

Collaborative networks enable the pooling of expertise and resources across various disciplines, enhancing the quality and relevance of research initiatives. Engaging with local stakeholders and community members builds trust and ownership, essential for successful health interventions. The exploration of innovative methodologies, such as community-based participatory research, is crucial for effectively addressing the complexities of rural health. As we know, collaborative efforts are imperative for improving health outcomes in rural communities with a focus on building research networks. Together, we can ensure that rural communities receive the healthcare they deserve.
