What drew you to research?

I wanted a change in my work and to try something different in an area that I’m passionate about. As an Aboriginal woman I have responsibilities to both my family, and within community.  We need Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices who have lived experience to guide and lead research. I want our people to have equitable opportunities and access to healthcare, and I saw an opportunity to be an Aboriginal voice that influences the research. The phrase ‘Nothing about us without us’ captures it for me. It’s about community mob feeling safe and making sure that both Aboriginal voices are heard, and that people who are taking part in the research feel heard.  Cultural limitations prevent non-Aboriginal people from being able to connect with community in a culturally effective way, which makes my role a critical one.
